Before you fill one of these in

Check you have the current version. HMRC and Companies House revise forms without announcement, and a superseded version is usually rejected rather than corrected — which costs you the time it took to send it plus however long the rejection takes to arrive. Always download from the source page on the day you file.

Check whether the form is still the right route at all. A good number of these have been replaced by an online service that is faster and gives you a receipt; the paper version survives for the cases the online one cannot handle. Where both exist, the online route is almost always the better one.

And check the deadline before the detail. Most of these forms exist because something changed — an appointment, an address, a registration, a status — and most of those changes carry a window to report them in. Missing the window generally costs more than getting a box wrong, because a wrong box can be corrected.
