Why a curated list rather than a search
Searching for a government service usually returns the right page third, behind two commercial sites charging for something that is free. Every link here goes to the official source — GOV.UK, HMRC, Companies House, the Pensions Regulator — and none of them costs anything to use.
Two cautions worth carrying with you. First, a great many services that look like official portals are resellers; if you are being asked to pay to file a confirmation statement or check a company record, you are on the wrong site. Second, GOV.UK guidance is written for the general case, and the general case is not always yours — the page telling you a deadline will not tell you that your circumstances move it.

Are these services free?
Every link here goes to an official source and none of them charges for the service itself. That is much of the reason the list exists: a search for a government service often returns commercial sites first, and several of those charge for filings you can make yourself for nothing.
How do I know a site is the real HMRC or Companies House?
Check the domain. Official UK government services are on gov.uk, and anything asking you to pay to file a confirmation statement or view a company record is not one. HMRC does not ask for personal details by email or text, and will not phone to demand immediate payment.
Is GOV.UK guidance enough on its own?
It is accurate and it is written for the general case, which is the limitation. A page that tells you a deadline will not tell you that your circumstances move it, and it cannot tell you which of two available treatments is better for you. It is a good place to check a fact and a poor place to make a decision.
